Real Tax Returns for Real Estate Agents
.... yes we know it's corny....
If you work in the real estate industry, then you probably spend quite a bit trying to sell people ‘the great Australian dream’.
So if this sounds like you, then you may be able to claim these costs as a tax deduction in your etax return. Below is a list of the common income tax deductions a real estate worker can claim:
Car expenses for work – Real Tax Deduction
If you use your car traveling to houses to sell or inspect, or doing other work trips you can claim your costs of doing so. You can either claim the number of kilometres travelled for work (up to a maximum of 5,000km) or if you kept a logbook you can claim your work % of car costs such as fuel, rego, insurance, repairs, depreciation, and interest.
Computer, laptop or camera expenses – Real Tax Deduction
For computers, laptops or cameras that cost under $300, these can be claimed straight away. If the cost is over $300 then the item purchased must be depreciated over a number of years. For example, the cost of a laptop is claimed over 3 years and a desktop computer is claimed over 4 years. Only the work-related portion can be claimed.
Uniforms – Real Tax Deduction
The purchase and laundry of uniforms that are required to be worn at work.
Self-Education – Real Tax Deduction
Any courses, seminars or study directly relating to your current job.
Phone and Internet – Real Tax Deduction
Work-related calls, texts and internet costs that were required to be made from your personal phone or device.
Advertising – Real Tax Deduction
Costs such as newspaper advertising, letterbox drops and signage. If you only earn a fixed salary and you’re not entitled to earn commission income then you CAN’T claim these costs.
Gifts – Real Tax deduction
Hampers, wine, vouchers, and flowers are the types of gifts that can be claimed. Entertainment gifts like tickets to the footy CAN’T be claimed. And like advertising above, If you only earn a fixed salary and you’re not entitled to earn income from commission then you CAN’T claim these costs.
Other expenses – Real Tax deduction
Work-related portion of newspapers, real estate journals or books and working from home.
You can’t claim equipment that is used for personal reasons or clothing that is not part of a uniform with a logo. You also can’t claim any entertainment costs such as lunch for a customer or a social breakfast put on by the Real Estate Institute.
