How to Claim Sunscreen as a Tax Deduction

Do you work outside amongst the gumtrees, mozzies, flies and blinding heat?

Well that's all a bit of an exaggeration, but if you do work outdoors, we all know we need to protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen can help you prevent sunburn, skin damage and skin cancer.  And because it's so "dangerous" you can actually claim sunscreen as a tax deduction.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO), allows you to claim a tax deduction for sunscreen if you tick the following boxes:

- It protects you from the real and likely risk of illness or injury at work
- It directly provides a degree of protection against that risk
- You paid for it yourself and were not reimbursed by your employer

A few examples of jobs that can expose you to the elements that necessitate sunscreen are:

- Construction workers
- Farmers
- Gardeners
- Lifeguards
- Outdoor sports coaches

To claim a deduction for sunscreen, you need to keep records of your expenses, such as receipts, invoices or diary entries. You also need to keep records of how you worked out the amount of your claim, such as how often you used sunscreen and how much you applied (good one, one squirt or two?).

Safely record your sunscreen receipts on the Gotax Deduction Grabber App throughout the year.  Scan the QR code now and start recording...

You can claim the actual amount you spent on sunscreen, or you can use a reasonable basis to estimate your claim, such as the recommended amount per application.
