Your Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique number used to identify you in your dealings with the ATO; it can also be used to lodge tax returns and other tax forms. If an unauthorised third party has, or potentially has the ability to access your TFN and personal information they may be committing Identity Fraud.
Protecting your Tax File Number

Only give your TFN out to people who legitimately need it. E.g. Your tax agent, current employer (once you are officially employed by them) or a bank.
-
Before throwing away documents with your TFN delete or destroy the TFN on the documents.
-
Don’t share your TFN, passwords or any other sensitive information via email.
If you know or suspect someone has stolen your TFN or is using your tax-related information illegally, you need to report this to the ATO on 1800 467 033, Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 6.00pm.
