Are Socks a Tax Deduction?

As a general rule the answer is a big fat No, that is no tax deductions for socks.  Only one exception, where the socks form part of a registered Corporate Uniform.  And if that applies to you, you would already be aware of it.

This type of tax deduction in its various form has been tested in the courts over the years and has never been found to be tax deductible.

Here is the basic premise as to why it's not tax deductible.  As a human you need a certain number of socks to conform and live in todays society.  As such, the costs to acquire those socks form part of your normal cost of living, your "Private Expenditure".

For there to be a tax deduction, it first must be something extra and above those normal societal costs. And secondly, the socks must be an essential cost required in earning your income.

So better luck next time.  See our blog the tax deductibility of undies, that'll blow your mind.
