How to File a Tax Return

Filing a tax return in Australia can be done online or on paper. Here are the steps to file your tax return online:

You can lodge directly with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).  Just remember that the ATO is a government body designed to collect tax.

You can also go online with someone like Gotax.  Gotax takes the complexity out of doing your tax return and provides you with the information and guidance to ensure you get all the tax deductions you are entitled to.

With Gotax most of your income will be pre-filled from details the ATO receives from your employer and financial institutions. Check that the information is correct and add any income that isn't there.

Then add any deductions you have, such as work expenses or charitable donations.  The Gotax system will guide you here to make sure you maximise your deductions and make sure they are valid.

The Gotax will submit your tax return through their tax agent portal with the ATO. The ATO will then process your tax return and issue your refund.  Refunds generally issue with ten business days.

If you prefer to file your tax return on paper, you can download the form from the ATO website and mail it in.  Make sure to file before the deadline of October 31st.  Paper tax returns tax around 50 days for the ATO to process.
