Claiming Home to Work travel with Bulky Tools

As a general rule you can’t claim the cost of trips between your home and your regular place of work, as this is considered a private expense. However, there are some exceptions. One of them is if you carry bulky tools or equipment that are essential for your work and there is no secure place to store them at your workplace. For example, this may apply to tradies who work at different sites and need to carry heavy or cumbersome tools or equipment in their car.  The key determination here is that there is no secure place to store those tools onsite.  Claiming Home to Work travel with Bulky Tools

If you meet these conditions, you can claim a deduction for the cost of trips between your home and work using one of the two methods: the cents per kilometre method or the logbook method. The cents per kilometre method allows you to claim a set rate of 78 cents per kilometre for up to 5,000 business kilometres per car, under this method you cannot claim more than 5000km each year. The other method is the logbook method, which allows you to claim a percentage of your actual car expenses based on the proportion of business use that is determined by the log book you keep for a continuous period of 12 weeks in a financial year.

The log book can be easily generated by having the deduction grabber app on your phone.  Simply record your daily trips, scan the QR code now...
