H1: Do I Need GST for My New ABN?

Most new ABN holders don’t need GST unless they expect to earn over $75,000 in the financial year. Rideshare drivers are the exception — they need GST from day one.

GST is the one topic that spooks new ABN holders for no reason. The truth? You only register if you expect your ABN income to hit $75,000 or more this year. If you’re under that — and most beginners are — GST just adds paperwork you don’t need.

The one major exception is rideshare and taxi work. Even if you earn $50 a week doing Uber, you still need GST because of how the law is written. Everyone else? Relax. If your turnover is nowhere near $75k, keep your life simple and stay unregistered.

GST registration means charging GST on your invoices, lodging quarterly BAS statements, and dealing with refund/credit calculations. If you don’t need to play that game yet, don’t sign yourself up for extra admin.

Quick breakdown:

  • Under $75k expected revenue? No GST.

  • Over $75k? Register.

  • Uber/rideshare? Mandatory GST.

  • Starting out? Keep it simple — no GST unless required.

If you’re unsure, use the GoTax ABN Guide — or just ask Derek. When you start your ABN tax return, we’ll tell you whether GST applies automatically.
