Small business tax return with GoTax

Built for people who run something real

Tradies with their own tools and van. Consultants with an ongoing client base. Online sellers holding stock. Service providers with a name, a brand, and repeat customers. If that’s you, this return is built around your business — not a one-off gig.

What your $140 covers

A business return, done properly

  • Full business schedule — income, expenses, trading stock, and assets, done right
  • Every legitimate deduction — vehicle, tools and machinery, stock, insurance, loan interest, super
  • Instant asset write-off applied where you’re eligible — up to $20,000 per asset (2025–26)
  • GST and BAS reconciled if you’re registered — no double-handling at tax time
  • PAYG instalments credited correctly, so you never pay twice

Already near or over $75,000? Here’s what changes.

GST registration and BAS

GST registration is compulsory once your turnover hits $75,000. Real small businesses cross this line more often than gig workers do — and once you’re registered, BAS becomes a quarterly job (28 Oct, 28 Feb, 28 Apr, 28 Jul), not a once-a-year one.

eCashbooks and Sole Trader Sorted

The easier way to run it: eCashbooks ($10/month, 30-day free trial) captures and GST-codes your income and expenses as you go, so your BAS — and next year’s return — practically prepares itself. Ask about Sole Trader Sorted: books, BAS and your annual return in one $39/month subscription, built for exactly this stage of business.

Thinking about hiring, or wondering if you should incorporate?

Taking on your first casual staff member means registering as an employer for PAYG withholding and super guarantee — we’ll tell you what changes. Turning your sole trader business into a company is a different question with different tax outcomes — see our Company & Trust Returns page if that’s on your mind. For now, as a sole trader, your business return is what you need.

FAQs — Small Business Tax Returns

  • What counts as a small business for tax purposes?

Running your own operation under an ABN — with your own tools, stock, clients or brand — rather than a single arrangement with one platform or client. If you are not sure which describes you, our Not sure? quiz on the ABN page will point you the right way.

  • Can I claim the instant asset write-off?

Yes. For 2025–26, eligible small businesses can fully write off assets costing under $20,000 in the year they are bought and used — tools, equipment, machinery, even a work vehicle. Above that, it is depreciated over time; we work out which treatment gets you the best result.

  • Do I need to register for GST?

Yes, once your turnover reaches $75,000 a year. Many small businesses cross this line as they grow — we will flag it during your return and help you get set up if you need to register.

  • What happens once I am GST-registered?

You lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) each quarter — 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July — reporting and paying GST. eCashbooks ($10/month) keeps your books GST-coded year-round so BAS stops being a scramble.

  • Can I claim trading stock and inventory?

Yes. If you sell products, stock on hand is accounted for at year-end and the cost of goods sold is deductible against your income. We will work through your stock position as part of your return.

  • What if I take on my first employee?

You will need to register for PAYG withholding and pay super guarantee on their wages — different obligations to running the business solo. Tell us before you hire and we will walk you through what changes.

  • Should I turn my business into a company?

Not automatically — it depends on profit level, asset protection and growth plans, and it is a different tax outcome to a sole trader return. This page covers sole trader business returns only; ask us if you want the company/trust conversation.

  • Can I claim my business vehicle?

Yes — the logbook method usually gives a bigger claim than cents-per-kilometre once you are running a real vehicle for the business, tools and all. We will work out which method suits your situation.

  • What records do real small businesses need to keep?

Invoices, receipts, stock records, a vehicle logbook and asset purchase records, for five years. eCashbooks captures all of this as you trade, so nothing gets reconstructed from memory at tax time.

  • Can I claim business loan or equipment finance interest?

Yes — interest on finance used for business purposes, including equipment loans and business credit, is deductible. Personal borrowing used for business is treated the same way, to the extent it is used for the business.

  • What if my business made a loss this year?

You declare it, and in most cases the loss carries forward to offset future profit — common in a business's early or slow years. We will check whether the non-commercial loss rules apply to your situation.

  • How is this different from an ABN tax return with GoTax?

Same fixed $140 and same registered agent review — this version is built around real business activity: stock, assets, GST/BAS and growth decisions. If you are doing occasional contract or gig work rather than running a business, our ABN Tax Return page is the simpler fit.

  • How much does GoTax charge for a small business tax return?

$140, fixed, including your full business schedule — no hidden fees. If you are GST-registered, ask about Sole Trader Sorted: books, BAS and your annual return for $39/month.
