Spouse Details & Tax – Why the ATO and Centrelink Care

Why do you need to provide spouse details?

Because your partner’s info helps:

  • Determine if you’re eligible for family payments, tax offsets, and rebates

  • Set your Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) threshold

  • Calculate your Private Health Insurance Rebate

  • Work out your Family Tax Benefit (FTB) or child support assessment


Who counts as a “spouse”?

You’ve got a spouse if you’re:

  • Married (even if separated but not divorced)

  • De facto, including same-sex couples

But… if you’re separated and no longer living together, the ATO and Centrelink say you’re not spouses for tax purposes.


What details do you need to provide?

You’ll usually need to report:

  • Full name

  • Date of birth

  • Gender

  • Income details:

    • Taxable income

    • Reportable fringe benefits

    • Reportable employer super contributions

    • Total investment losses, etc.

  • Period you had a spouse (if it wasn’t the whole year)

  • Whether you received Family Tax Benefit or child support

  • Whether your spouse was an Australian tax resident

In your tax return:

  • The “Spouse details” section

  • Essential for calculating offsets, rebates, MLS threshold, and dependants

To Centrelink:

  • When applying for FTB, childcare subsidy, or other benefits
