Do I have to lodge a tax return?

Nobody likes to do their tax return, not even us bean counters, but for most of us it is the law that forces us to do so. Besides, the ATO needs to know what you have earned so they can send you your tax refund (if applicable).

Do you need to lodge a tax return?

We here at Gotax, make it simple, easy and sometimes a little bit of fun, to put in the dreaded tax return and get you the maximum tax refund possible.

By lodging a tax return, you may be entitled to a tax refund of some of the tax that has been withheld from your wages or payments, and unless you are not required by law to lodge, you will avoid a hefty fine.

Tax returns are due yearly on the 31st of October if you are doing it yourself, or if you are having a tax agent prepare it for you, it is due early May.

If you don’t need to lodge a tax return, make sure you let the ATO know by sending them a non- lodgement advice either online via MyGov or by posting in a non-lodgment advice form. You won't need to fill in this form if you have already told the ATO you don't need to lodge any more tax returns, were only on Centrelink benefits (and didn’t have them withhold any tax), or were a working holidaymaker on a 417 or 462 visa and your income was under the $37,001 threshold.
