Published: July 2025

Working as a contractor in 2025? Whether you're in steel caps or loafers, on a mine site or in a home office, tax doesn’t discriminate. This no-nonsense Gotax guide will help you play by the ATO’s rules while keeping more of what you earn.

Contractor ABN doing his tax

Do I Need an ABN?

Yes. If you're invoicing clients, doing project work, or otherwise running a business (even solo), you need an ABN. It’s your business ID and lets you invoice, claim deductions, and register for GST.

Do I Need to Register for GST?

You must register if your annual turnover hits $75,000. Below that, it's optional. If you pass the threshold, you've got 21 days to register.

  • Registered: Charge 10% GST, lodge BAS, and pay GST (but claim credits too).

  • Not Registered: Don’t charge GST. Can’t claim GST credits. Simple.

What Income Do I Declare?

Every cent. The ATO doesn’t miss much these days.

  • Payments from clients

  • Labour hire income

  • Referral, bonus, or commission income

  • Cash jobs and online gig work

What Deductions Can I Claim?

You can claim costs directly related to earning your income:

  • Tools, computers, equipment

  • Travel, fuel, parking (work-related only)

  • Home office bills

  • Phone and internet (business-use portion)

  • Work clothing and PPE

  • Training, licences, and certifications

  • Accounting, legal, and bank fees

  • Insurance (liability, income protection, etc.)

Car deductions:

  • Cents per km method: Up to 5,000km @ 85c/km

  • Logbook method: Claim actual costs based on business-use %

Record-Keeping Essentials

  • Keep all receipts and records for 5 years

  • Log car use if claiming more than the 5,000km method

  • Use a spreadsheet, software, or shoebox (we prefer option 2)

ABN Deductions

Superannuation

As a contractor, you're usually on your own with super. But if you work mainly for one client and they’re paying you for your labour, they might need to pay your super.

You can make personal contributions and claim a tax deduction too.

BAS & GST Credits

If you’re GST registered:

  • Lodge your BAS on time (quarterly, mostly)

  • Pay 1/11th of your GST-inclusive earnings

  • Claim GST on business purchases

Can I claim my home internet and phone? Yes—but only the business portion. Estimate or keep records.

Can I claim meals and entertainment? Not for yourself. Some client/staff entertainment might qualify.

What if I make a loss? You may offset it against other income. Check the rules.

Do I need to keep every receipt? Yes. No proof = no deduction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Claiming 100% of something that's only 60% business

  • Mixing personal and business costs

  • Forgetting to register for GST when required

  • Not keeping receipts

  • Missing BAS or tax deadlines

  • Assuming clients don’t owe you super
