Claiming Transport Costs | 2023 Gotax

Can I claim my Transport Costs on my Tax Return?

Yes, you can claim a tax deduction for transport expenses if the expenses are work-related. You can claim for trips between workplaces or to perform your work duties. However, you can’t claim for trips between your home and place of work, except in limited circumstances. You must have spent the money yourself and weren’t reimbursed.

Transport Tips and Traps:

If your travel is partly private, you can only claim a deduction for the work-related portion of the expenses you incur1.
You must have a record of your expenses1.
Lets look at an Example:

If you are required to travel from your place of work to another location to meet with a client or attend a work conference, you can claim the cost of transport such as flights, train, bus, taxi or ride-share fares. However, if you travel from your home to your place of work and back again, this is considered private travel and cannot be claimed as a deduction.

Use Gotax's Deduction Grabber App to track those expenses and never lose a Tax Deduction again.
