Working Holiday Maker Tax Return 2026: What Backpackers Need to Know

If you worked in Australia on a Working Holiday visa subclass 417 or 462, you may need to lodge an Australian tax return for 2026.

Working Holiday Makers are taxed under special rules. Most WHM income is taxed from the first dollar, and the usual tax-free threshold generally does not apply to WHM income.

That means one important thing:

You may get a refund, but you should not assume you will get all your tax back.

GoTax helps Working Holiday Makers lodge online for a flat $65 fee, using available ATO prefill, WHM residency checks and a review before lodgement.

You can start your WHM tax return online with GoTax when you are ready.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is for you if you worked in Australia during the 2026 tax year while holding a:

  • subclass 417 Working Holiday visa

  • subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa

It may also help if you:

  • worked on a farm

  • worked in hospitality

  • worked in tourism

  • worked as a casual employee

  • had several employers

  • left Australia before lodging

  • are confused about your refund estimate

  • are not sure whether WHM tax rates apply

In other words, normal backpacker tax chaos.

But organised.

If you are looking for the main service page, go straight to the GoTax Working Holiday Maker tax return page.

Do Working Holiday Makers need to lodge a tax return?

Usually, yes.

If you earned income in Australia, you may need to lodge an Australian tax return.

This can include:

  • wages

  • salary

  • casual work

  • farm work

  • hospitality work

  • labouring income

  • tourism work

  • bank interest

  • ABN income, if you worked as a contractor

Your tax return reports your Australian income, claims any eligible deductions, and works out whether you receive a refund or have tax to pay.

If you are not a Working Holiday Maker and simply need help lodging a standard return, GoTax also has a broader online tax return service.

What tax rate applies to Working Holiday Makers?

Working Holiday Makers are taxed under special WHM rules.

Most WHMs pay 15% tax from the first dollar earned, up to $45,000.

This is different from the ordinary resident tax rates that many Australians use.

For most WHM income, there is generally:

  • no tax-free threshold

  • no automatic refund of all tax withheld

  • no guarantee of a large refund

  • no resident-style tax calculation unless your circumstances support different treatment

This is one of the biggest WHM tax surprises.

Not a fun surprise.

More like finding out your flight has been delayed after you already bought airport food.

Why your refund may be smaller than expected

Many Working Holiday Makers expect to get all their tax back.

That is usually not how WHM tax works.

Your refund may be smaller because:

  • tax applies from the first dollar

  • your employer may have withheld the correct tax

  • deductions reduce taxable income, but not dollar-for-dollar

  • superannuation is separate from your tax return

  • your residency status needs to be checked properly

  • your refund estimate may change once the ATO processes the return

Tax withheld from wages is not automatically sitting there waiting to come back to you.

It is tax already paid during the year.

If too much was paid, you may get a refund.

If the right amount was paid, the refund may be small.

Annoying, yes.

Wrong, not necessarily.

For a broader overview of the current tax year, see the GoTax Tax Return 2026 guide.

GoTax checks your WHM residency position

WHM tax treatment can depend on more than simply holding a 417 or 462 visa.

Your country of origin and your connection to Australia may affect how your return should be treated.

GoTax uses a WHM Residency Questionnaire to help determine the correct tax residency position before lodgement.

This helps avoid one of the biggest WHM tax return problems:

getting a refund estimate based on the wrong tax treatment.

A big estimate is not useful if it disappears after lodgement.

We prefer correct.

Less exciting.

More reliable.

ATO prefill helps reduce manual entry

GoTax uses available ATO prefill to help bring in key information for your tax return.

This may include:

  • visa status

  • Australian income details

  • income statements or payment summaries

  • bank interest, if any

You still need to check the information.

ATO prefill is helpful, but it is not always perfect or complete.

You may still need to add missing details, answer residency questions, include deductions and finalise your return.

Think of prefill as helpful.

Not psychic.

What deductions can Working Holiday Makers claim?

Working Holiday Makers may be able to claim deductions if the expense directly relates to earning income and records are available.

Common WHM deductions may include:

  • work boots

  • protective clothing

  • compulsory uniforms

  • tools and equipment

  • phone use for work

  • internet use for work

  • work-related travel between job sites

  • union fees

  • tax agent fees

  • training directly related to your work

The expense needs to be connected to your work.

Private costs are not deductible just because you were in Australia when you spent the money.

That means things like normal clothes, rent, groceries, sightseeing, travel to your normal workplace and weekend adventures are generally not work deductions.

The ATO is surprisingly uninterested in your “emotional support surf trip”.

What if you already left Australia?

You can still lodge your WHM tax return online through GoTax.

You do not need to be in Australia.

ATO systems can sometimes be difficult with overseas contact details. Where needed, GoTax uses its Australian business address and Australian phone number to help manage the lodgement process properly.

That means you can complete your return from overseas without getting stuck on Australian address or phone-number issues.

You can lodge from overseas through the GoTax WHM tax return service, provided your return details are complete and ready for review.

What about superannuation?

Your Australian super is separate from your tax return.

If you have left Australia permanently, you may be able to apply for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment, often called DASP.

That is not the same thing as your tax refund.

Your tax return deals with income, deductions and tax.

Your super claim deals with your super balance.

Different process.

Same Australian paperwork universe.

What if you worked on an ABN?

Some Working Holiday Makers work through an ABN.

That is different from ordinary wages.

If you worked through an ABN, you may need to include business income and business-related deductions.

You may also need better records, such as:

  • invoices

  • bank deposits

  • business expenses

  • work-related receipts

  • kilometre or travel records, if relevant

ABN income should not be treated as ordinary wages.

Different income bucket.

Different tax treatment.

Still needs to be declared.

If you worked mainly through an ABN, the GoTax ABN tax return service may be more relevant than a simple wages-only WHM return.

How GoTax works

Step 1: Start online

Create or log in to your GoTax account and start your WHM tax return.

You can begin on the Working Holiday Maker tax return page, or return to your account through the GoTax login page.

Step 2: Check your prefilled details

GoTax pre-fills your available ATO income details and visa status where available.

You check the information, answer the WHM residency questions, add any missing details, and include eligible deductions.

Step 3: Pay the $65 fee

Your WHM tax return is a flat $65.

Step 4: Finalise your return

This step matters.

Paid does not mean lodged.

You need to finalise your return so it is ready for our tax team to review.

Step 5: GoTax checks and lodges

GoTax reviews your return before lodgement.

If something looks wrong, we’ll let you know.

Why use GoTax for your WHM tax return?

You can lodge through myGov.

But myGov will not explain WHM refund expectations, check your residency answers, prompt you through deductions, or review the return before lodgement.

GoTax gives you:

  • flat $65 WHM pricing

  • online lodgement from Australia or overseas

  • ATO prefill where available

  • WHM Residency Questionnaire

  • deduction prompts

  • tax agent review before lodgement

  • practical WHM tax guidance

If your return is simple, we keep it simple.

If something needs checking, we check it.

That is the whole point.

Quick WHM tax return checklist

Before lodging, check:

  • Have all employers been included?

  • Has your visa status been checked?

  • Have you completed the WHM Residency Questionnaire?

  • Have you checked ATO prefill?

  • Have you added missing income, if needed?

  • Have you included valid work deductions?

  • Do you have records for your deductions?

  • Have you understood that tax withheld is not automatically your refund?

  • Have you finalised the return after payment?

That last one matters.

A paid return that is not finalised is not ready for lodgement.

Tax returns are annoying like that.

They like the final button.

Frequently asked questions

Do Working Holiday Makers get a tax refund?

Sometimes. It depends on income, tax withheld, deductions and the correct WHM tax treatment.

Do WHMs get the tax-free threshold?

Generally no. Most WHM income is taxed under the Working Holiday Maker rules from the first dollar.

What visa subclasses are Working Holiday Makers?

The main WHM visa subclasses are 417 Working Holiday and 462 Work and Holiday.

Can I lodge after leaving Australia?

Yes. GoTax lets you lodge your WHM tax return online from overseas through the WHM tax return service.

Does GoTax use ATO prefill?

Yes. GoTax uses available ATO prefill to help bring in income details, visa status and other available tax information.

Can WHMs claim deductions?

Yes, where the expense is work-related and properly supported by records.

Is super included in my tax refund?

No. Superannuation is separate from your tax return. You may need to apply for DASP separately after leaving Australia.

How much does GoTax cost?

A WHM tax return with GoTax is $65.

Why is my Working Holiday Maker refund smaller than I expected?

Because Working Holiday Maker tax applies from the first dollar you earn, so there is usually no over-withheld tax-free threshold to refund. If your employer withheld the correct amount during the year, the right outcome is a small refund or none at all. Deductions reduce your taxable income, not your tax bill dollar for dollar, and superannuation is not part of your refund.

What is the GoTax WHM Residency Questionnaire?

It is a short set of questions GoTax uses to establish your correct tax residency position before your return is lodged. Holding a 417 or 462 visa does not by itself settle how your income should be treated, and getting this wrong produces a refund estimate that changes once the ATO processes the return.

Does my country of origin affect my Working Holiday Maker tax?

It can. Australia has tax treaties with some countries containing a non-discrimination article, and where that applies alongside your circumstances in Australia it may affect the tax basis you are assessed on. This is why GoTax checks residency and country of origin before lodgement rather than applying the WHM rate automatically.

What happens if I earned both wages and ABN income on my working holiday?

Both must be declared, but they are treated differently. Wages are reported as salary income with tax already withheld, while ABN income is business income where you report what you earned and claim business expenses against it. ABN work needs better records — invoices, bank deposits, expense receipts and travel records where relevant.

Can I claim flights, rent or travel around Australia as deductions?

No. Flights to and from Australia, rent, groceries, ordinary clothing, sightseeing and travel between home and your regular workplace are private expenses, not work deductions. An expense only becomes deductible where it relates directly to earning your Australian income and you hold records for it.

Is paying the $65 the same as lodging my return?

No. Payment and lodgement are separate steps. After paying you must finalise your return so it moves to the GoTax tax team for review — a paid return that has not been finalised is not ready to lodge and will sit waiting. Finalising is the step most people miss.
